It turns out I’m not the first one to theorize about this. Technically, the term is “Four Stages of Competence” and was originally established by Gordon Training International in the 70s. A lot of people struggle when transitioning to Stage Four. They’ve retired from decades-long careers that gave their life purpose and the years ahead now feel devoid of meaning. Team members feel an increasing acceptance of others on the team, recognizing that the variety of opinions and experiences makes the team stronger and its product richer.
